Tasting Notes

The Hexe 2019 from Saxum Vineyards is a masterpiece of power, purity, and finesse, standing as one of the most profound Rhône-style blends ever crafted in Paso Robles.
It opens with a mesmerizing bouquet of black raspberry, kirsch, plum, violet, garrigue, and crushed rock, joined by nuances of lavender, graphite, smoked herbs, and licorice.

On the palate, it is full-bodied, seamless, and multi-dimensional, offering waves of ripe red and black fruits, pepper, cocoa, and mineral undertones.
The texture is lush yet refined, supported by ultra-fine tannins and vibrant acidity that create a perfect balance between opulence and energy.
The finish is long, layered, and pure, leaving a lasting impression of harmony, minerality, and precision.

This 2019 Hexe is a breathtaking expression of Paso Robles limestone terroir, uniting depth and detail in a way only Saxum can achieve.

Vintage Highlights

The 2019 growing season was temperate and consistent, allowing for even ripening and pristine fruit quality.
Sourced from select parcels within the James Berry Vineyard, the Hexe blend captures the vineyard’s oldest Grenache and Mataro vines, rooted deeply in limestone and calcareous soils.
Aged for around 22 months in large French oak puncheons and concrete amphorae, the wine achieved both structure and purity with minimal oak imprint.

✔ 100 points Robert Parker – “a perfect wine; monumental yet graceful, pure and endlessly complex”
✔ From the oldest limestone-rich blocks of James Berry Vineyard
✔ Profound depth and precision with remarkable aromatic lift
✔ A collector’s wine built for decades of evolution

Why It’s Special

Hexe is one of Saxum’s most limited and coveted cuvées, produced only in vintages that reach absolute balance and brilliance.
The 2019 edition exemplifies Justin Smith’s mastery of blending — capturing the soul of Paso Robles through a wine that is powerful, elegant, and unmistakably refined.
It stands as a benchmark for California Grenache-based wines, rivaling the great Rhône crus in intensity and grace.
